For a family medicine intern, this privilege has a slightly different flavor. It’s the privilege of witnessing the events that bring people into the hospital throughout their lifespan — birth and death and the illness in between them. And as an intern in the midst of a pandemic, I’ve learned that this privilege can go hand in hand with pain. These days, it is the pain of witnessing the profound loneliness created by closing our hospital doors to all but the ill and the people charged with healing them — a loneliness that feels entirely distinctive at each age and stage of life.

For example, in a study in Wuhan, China, 36 percent of older COVID patients had neurologic complaints, such as dizziness, pain, sleep disturbances, and problems with balance. Eight percent had impaired consciousness.

Yes, it is important to learn all we can about how health habits affect the risks for developing dementia, a debilitating decline in memory and other mental abilities. Experiencing cognitive decline means you are having episodes of memory loss or confusion that are getting worse or becoming more frequent. Cognitive decline can lessen your ability to perform everyday activities, such as taking medication, bathing, cooking and cleaning.

Definition of a Caregiver https://www.trendhhs.com/caregivers/definition-of-a-caregiver/ https://www.trendhhs.com/caregivers/definition-of-a-caregiver/#comments Tue, 17 Nov 2020 20:14:55 +0000 http://www.ohanahhc.com/?p=2482 A caregiver is someone who provides care for another person. Caregivers help individuals achieve tasks and functions necessary for daily life that may have, for a number of reasons, become inaccessible to them. What defines a caregiver is a desire to serve coupled with the nature of the specific duties they perform.

Digital Modern Caregivers https://www.trendhhs.com/aging-at-home/digital-modern-caregivers/ https://www.trendhhs.com/aging-at-home/digital-modern-caregivers/#comments Sat, 06 Oct 2018 04:00:20 +0000 http://www.ohanahhc.com/uncategorized/digital-modern-caregivers/
Most caregivers involved with home care services would be inclined to dialogue with other caregivers in an online forum or social networking site, according to a survey. Furthermore, 91% of caregivers would be likely to conduct research after receiving a provider referral by a professional source.

In my opinion, our health care system has failed when a doctor fails to treat an illness that is treatable.

Role of a Family Caregiver

While 78% would rely on a physician for recommendations, caregivers ultimately make their own decisions on long-term care providers. Websites are generally considered highly credible by caregivers, and are important sources of information for engaged caregivers on sources for long-term care. (Source: 33charts.com)

Broad Clinical Interviews https://www.trendhhs.com/aging-at-home/broad-clinical-interviews/ https://www.trendhhs.com/aging-at-home/broad-clinical-interviews/#comments Sat, 06 Oct 2018 03:59:33 +0000 http://www.ohanahhc.com/uncategorized/broad-clinical-interviews/
When I evaluate a new patient, I work to compress data collection and screen time on the front end of the visit so I can free up the remainder of the visit for face-to-face discussion and shared decision making. This intentional visit design is necessary because of the realities of modern clinic schedules. And so the questions I ask and their sequence is important to my understanding as well as the experience of the patient.

The art of medicine consists of amusing the patient while nature cures the disease.

Role of a Family Caregiver

In medicine there are clinical interview questions that deliver high impact nuggets at low-cost. This is one of them. This question exposes critical data that, in the background, often drives my initial approach to diagnostics and therapy. If you are a health professional try it and you’ll see. Clearly, there are clinical specialty visits that are more transactional where open-ended questions are not as critical. A good example would be consultation with a surgeon for hernia repair where the task at hand is unequivocal. (Source: 33charts.com)

According to the World Health Organization, over 15 percent of adults over the age of 60 suffer from a mental disorder. A common mental disorder among seniors is depression, occurring in seven percent of the elderly population. Unfortunately, this mental disorder is often underdiagnosed and undertreated.

It is hard to talk about a middle ground for something that is a fundamental right.

Chronic Mental Issues

Older adults account for over 18 percent of suicides deaths in the United States. Because depression can be a side effect of chronic health conditions, managing those conditions help. Additionally, promoting a lifestyle of healthy living such as betterment of living conditions and social support from family, friends or support groups can help treat depression. Elderly Health Issues

Cognitive health is focused on a person’s ability to think, learn and remember. The most common cognitive health issue facing the elderly is dementia, the loss of those cognitive functions. Approximately 47.5 million people worldwide have dementia—a number that is predicted to nearly triple in size by 2050. (Source: vitalrecord.tamhsc.edu)

Medicine’s Epic Production https://www.trendhhs.com/opinion/medicines-epic-production/ https://www.trendhhs.com/opinion/medicines-epic-production/#respond Fri, 05 Oct 2018 08:55:29 +0000 http://www.ohanahhc.com/uncategorized/medicines-epic-production/
For many of my colleagues sharing ideas is an epic production. 5000 words, weeks of preparation, peer approval, boss endorsement, pages of references, etc. Sharing ideas, we’ve been taught, is an epic production. We are bred to believe that ideas are shared only when they’re done. We think that value only comes with the finished product.

Role of a Family Caregiver

But this is how the networked communication changes things. Thinking is frequently public before it is finished. And are ideas ever really finished? There’s the fear of losing our ideas. Concepts found here have made their way into a number of finished products without ever mentioning me. And that’s fine. If I were worried about that I never would have shared it with you. For me the benefit of collective input outweighs the risk. (Source: 33chart.com)
